Günther Storms from P19 to P6 as DS PENSKE continues upward trajectory with back-to-back double points finish
DS PENSKE continued its strong run of form in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with a double points finish at the Sanya E-Prix, as Maximilian Günther and Taylor Barnard crossed the line in sixth and ninth positions respectively following an action-packed race on the streets of Haitang Bay.
As anticipated, the inaugural Formula E race around the fast and challenging Sanya street circuit delivered plenty of drama. Multiple incidents throughout the field led to a red flag interruption midway through the race and a standing restart, setting the stage for a thrilling second phase.
Günther delivered one of the standout drives of the afternoon. The German carefully worked his way through the field during the opening laps before perfectly executing his strategy after the restart. Maximising the benefits of Attack Mode, he made a series of decisive overtakes to climb into the top six.
On the other side of the garage, Barnard once again demonstrated maturity beyond his years. The British driver reinforced his growing reputation with a lightning-fast qualifying performance. The Briton remained in contention throughout the race, avoided the numerous incidents and brought home valuable points with a ninth-place finish, securing a second DS PENSKE car inside the top ten.
The double points finish adds another 10 valuable championship points to the team’s tally and confirms the encouraging momentum shown since Monaco. Following consecutive double-points performances, DS PENSKE continues its rise in both championships as the season enters its decisive phase.
Maximilian Günther – DS PENSKE driver
‘Finishing fifth is clearly a great result for us. This excellent points haul is very good for our morale, because it was a truly difficult weekend. I was lacking pace and confidence with the car. On top of that, it was always going to be a complicated race from 19th on the grid. But we made up for that with an excellent strategy, great energy management, and some decisive attacks towards the end. With a bit more success we could have done even better, but this has still been a very welcome return to the front. Well done to the whole team!’.
Taylor Barnard – DS PENSKE Driver
‘I’m feeling a bit frustrated to finish ninth as we could have got a much better result and finished on the podium. The strategy put in place by the team was really good. We were just a bit unlucky in losing four minutes of Attack Mode due to a Full Course Yellow. Now we’re going to focus on the next races and hope to find the success that eluded us this weekend.’
