Tokyo Big Sight, Japan – The 2025 Tokyo double-header delivered an action-packed weekend that truly lived up to the city’s vibrant energy—Tokyo never disappoints. Set against the iconic backdrop of Tokyo Big Sight, the tight and technical circuit challenged drivers with changing weather and relentless racing. Jean-Éric Vergne and Maximilian Günther rose to the occasion, each showcasing high-level skill and racecraft across both races, underlining DS PENSKE’s competitive edge in one of the most spectacular events on the calendar.

Round 8 – Battling through the Storm – Saturday, The inaugural Tokyo E-Prix delivered a dramatic and weather-affected spectacle as DS PENSKE’s Jean-Éric Vergne secured a eighth-place finish, adding four valuable points to the team’s championship tally.

Heavy rain in the morning forced the cancellation of qualifying, with the starting grid set according to times from the second free practice session. Jean-Éric Vergne and Maximilian Günther lined up in P8 and P9 respectively on the 2.5-kilometre street circuit around Tokyo Big Sight.

The race began cautiously behind the safety car due to the wet track. After a few laps, a standing start was held, and both DS E-TENSE FE25 cars maintained positions inside the top 10. However, Günther’s race was cut short when he was forced to retire due to a battery issue, prompting a red flag.

Following the restart, JEV delivered a composed and strategic drive, managing his Pit Boost and Attack Mode effectively to move into 10th place. In the closing stages, the Frenchman made full use of his Attack Mode and finished in ninth place. A post-race penalty applied to a rival promoted him to eighth at the flag. JEV’s result earned DS PENSKE four more championship points.

Round 9 – Dry Track, Fierce Racing – The Tokyo street circuit was dry for Round 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. After a strong showing in qualifying, Jean-Éric Vergne advanced to the semi-finals and secured a second-row start in P4, while teammate Maximilian Günther lined up 12th.

The 32-lap contest delivered non-stop action with fierce battles throughout the field. Jean-Eric Vergne ran consistently in the top 10, demonstrating sharp race craft and consistency. Capitalizing on a Full Course Yellow and executing his second Attack Mode perfectly, he surged into the top five with a bold late charge. Despite a late-race Safety Car, he crossed the line in sixth, securing more valuable points for the team.

Maximilian Günther also delivered a determined performance, climbing into the top 10 despite the neutralisation of the race shortly after he activated his Attack Mode. He brought his DS E-TENSE FE25 home in 10th, rounding off a solid double points finish for DS PENSKE in the Japanese capital.

Next Stop: Shanghai! DS PENSKE is ready to keep momentum going as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship heads to China for a thrilling double-header on May 31st and June 1st, 2025.

Jean-Éric Vergne, DS PENSKE Driver – 2018 & 2019 Formula E Champion

Saturday was a tough day! The weather meant that qualifying was cancelled, which is a shame because the car was performing well in the rain. I started and finished eighth. And that obviously means not enough points.

Sunday, the start was a mixed bag for me, as I immediately lost positions, and my first Attack Mode was also tricky. So I found myself further down the order, with the sole objective of fighting back, which I managed to do by finishing sixth. This was not the result I was hoping for, but it still brings solid points for the championship. The car felt good, and now we just need to put all the pieces together to aim for better results. I’m feeling confident for Shanghai.’

Maximilian Günther – DS PENSKE driver

‘To sum up the whole weekend, we were solid in the first free practice sessions before heading in directions that weren’t ideal. On Sunday, the performance just wasn’t really there, which dropped us to 13th on the starting grid. The first part of the race was tough, but then I managed to climb back up to grab a spot in the top 10. The neutralisation that came right after I activated my Attack Mode was a real shame. I ended up behind the Safety Car for two minutes, which definitely cost me a few positions. So this wasn’t really our weekend, but I know the team is strong and I’m sure we’ll be able to bounce back in two weeks in China.’
