The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returned this weekend to the legendary Circuit de Monaco for Rounds 9 and 10 of the season 12, as the all-electric series took on one of the most iconic and demanding circuits in world motorsport.
Steeped in racing history, Monaco has challenged generations of drivers for nearly a century. The 3.337 km street circuit, featuring 19 turns, remains one of the purest tests of precision, commitment and concentration in motorsport. Narrow barriers, constant elevation changes, and unforgiving corners leave no margin for error, rewarding drivers who combine confidence and race intelligence around the streets of Monte Carlo.
For Formula E, Monaco has become one of the benchmark events of the championship, showcasing electric racing on a circuit traditionally associated with the greatest names and moments in motorsport history. Racing through famous sections such as Sainte Dévote, Casino Square, the Grand Hotel Hairpin, and the Tunnel places Formula E drivers in direct continuity with decades of racing heritage.
This season’s Monaco E-Prix featured a double-header weekend. Saturday’s race also included the Pit Boost format, adding another layer of strategy and complexity on a circuit where track position and energy management are critical.
The team leaves Monaco with valuable points after a competitive and hard-fought weekend in the Principality. Saturday delivered a positive result, with Taylor Barnard securing P7 after a well-executed race, while Max Günther also finished in the points in P10. Max additionally set the fastest lap of the race, underlining the strong pace shown by the team throughout the day.
Sunday proved to be a more eventful encounter. Taylor was unfortunately forced to retire the car after attempting to pull away, bringing an early end to his race despite promising potential. On the other side of the garage, Max once again demonstrated strong pace but saw his race compromised by a penalty, preventing him from converting the performance into a stronger finishing position.
The championship now heads east for the opening leg of the Asian tour, beginning with the Sanya E-Prix on June 20. The single race event in China will mark the start of an important sequence of races across Asia, with Shanghai and Tokyo following shortly after, as the team continues its fight for more points during a crucial stage of the season.
Maximilian Günther – DS PENSKE driver
‘There are definitely mixed emotions after Monaco. On Saturday we managed to score points and setting the fastest lap showed the pace we had in the car, which is encouraging. Sunday was more difficult because the penalty compromised our race, even though the pace was there once again. Still, the team worked extremely hard all weekend and we showed good competitiveness around one of the toughest circuits on the calendar. Now the focus shifts to the Asian tour, starting in Sanya, where we want to continue fighting for strong results and more points.’
Taylor Barnard – DS PENSKE Driver
‘Saturday was a solid race for us and it was important to come away from Monaco with points. The car felt competitive throughout the weekend and finishing P7 on such a demanding circuit is always valuable. Obviously, Sunday was frustrating because we had the potential to fight again, but unfortunately, I was forced to retire the car after trying to pull away. Monaco can punish the smallest issue immediately, but overall there are still positives to take from the weekend and we now look ahead to Sanya ready to keep pushing.’
